How you can Choose A Good Adware Blocker

The modern world lives on computers, which became an indispensable element of our society and everyday life. However viruses, spyware and adware often inflict irreparable damage to computers not only by erasing valuable data system but also by the crash of hard disk in some cases.

Adware is actually a software that displays advertisements in the form of pop ups, banners, pop-unders and promotional materials often with adult content. Some of these are extremely harmful adware as is often rummage through your browser that hinder the activity of your privacy to a large extent and cause more harm than just taking you to certain websites. Adware gathers information on websites youve visited, and slows your computer as a shipping line can become frustrating. They may even change the settings on your computer. A adware blocker can stop this situation.

Some of adware are so powerful that they often have control of your browser. May They even send you to another Web page without your permission of course. Five Things YOU Can Do To Help Computer Science Education

This week Time magazine ran an article: Can We Fix Computer Science Education in America? You should go read it. No problem, Ill wait.

The tech industry is one of the few bright spots in a dim economy. So why arent we teaching kids the skills they need to participate in it?

Indeed.

The good news is there are a lot of folks out there working on this.

There are of course there are programs like Exploring Computer Science and the new CS Principles pilot that offer curriculum and training for teachers trying to build computer science in our schools.

But the real question is what are YOU doing? This issue impacts all of us. It is not OK to just sit there hoping someone else is plugging away at this. Seriously, Cameron Wilsons great, but hes pretty busy already.Five things you should do NOW to help computer science education:
  1. Get every kid you know under the age of 10 hooked on Scratch or Alice or even QBasic. Let them play, and ask questions, and show off what they make.
  1. Ask if computer science is in your local schools - then ask why not. Oh, and dont just ask about your school...ask about that other one, down the block. The urban/rural/under-served school. Those kids need this too.
  1. Stop blaming guidance counselors and administrators and every other bogey man out there. No one likes whiners, and those folks are busy worrying about dropout rates and intruder drills and grumpy parents. Give them something to value in computer science. Positive energy breeds long term success. Make the Computer Science program something they can brag about.
  1. Go to a CSTA meeting. No local chapter? Start one - its super easy.
  1. Select one:
  • If you are in Virginia - comment on the new technology SOLs. Not sure what to say? Hows this: Computer Science is the discipline underlying all innovation, especially in the STEM fields. Our students need to move beyond just working on learning computer applications to learning the computer science topics that will build their success in school and future careers. Computer Science should be included in the Computer Technology SOLs.
  • Dont live in Virginia? First, yes our standardized tests are called SOLs. No, that is not a joke. Second - find your state standards. Is computer science in there? Just figuring out where you state stands is a great first step.

So my question for you - what are YOU doing?

Why you Need a Popcorn Maker

Ok - I know, this is not exactly a programmable device.

But, I am assuming you want to get kids into your lab. I spent $20 on this last year and it has by far been the best piece of equipment I have added to our lab.

Why?

  • Teenagers like food
  • I have never in 16 years had a kid allergic to pop-corn
  • It is cheap food, and I am a teacher...enough said
  • As a mom I like that popcorn is relatively healthy. We eat it plain - no junk added. They grumble, but they still eat it.
  • The aroma brings kids in from the hall. I have at least two kids in my classes this year that first came to the lab for the popcorn

Stop Painful Parent Conferences You need an Action Plan

It is that time of year...pool, fireflies, and skipping seniors.

Inevitably I end up with a small group of students in danger of failing computer science because of a ridiculous backlog of missing work. Especially if the student needs the class to graduate there can be a lot of pressure and friction in this situation.

A few years back, after a particularly ugly round I had a brilliant idea - the action plan. I use this strategy to inject sanity into these stressful parent interactions.

It is a two step process.
  1. I have the students sign a plan that lists all the work they need to turn in.The key to this is use specific due dates. Dont do the work on time? You dont pass.
  2. I get them to sign it and mail a copy home, then call to let the parents know it is coming. Every time they miss an appointment to do the work, I call home.
I cannot begin to tell you how many headaches this avoids. Parents know exactly what is coming, and the student has an exact plan for how to improve the grade. Most of my students now successfully finish their step-by-step plan and end up passing.
For a kid that has fallen behind seeing a list of items listed by date takes an overwhelming problem and makes it doable.

And for the kids that dont do it? It creates perfect documentation of how I tried to help them pass. It has removed almost all of  the tension form those end of the year parent conferences.

You can download a copy here.

To Make a Program you Have to Break Some Eggs

One of my favorite toys in computer science are plastic eggs. Cheap and they can be used to teach so many things. We are working on searches and sorts in the APCS class right now. They also work well when doing algorithms in the CS Principles class.

To start with searches and sorts I use plastic eggs filled with fish tank gravel. Email your faculty and parents - I guarantee you can get these for free. Fill the eggs with varying amount of gravel and tape them shut. Better yet have a kid do this. You are busy.

I let the kids pick a partner and each pair gets 6 or 7 eggs. Please do not forget to explain that the eggs do not have candy in them. I didnt do that the first time we did this and it made for a very disappointing mess.

Have them put the eggs in a row then "search" for the heaviest egg. Write out the steps you followed.

On the board I then do:

int eggs[] = new int[6];

This is in the APCS class, in CS Principles I make this less formal since they will be doing this in Scratch.

I have the kids come to the board and write out their algorithm, in Java in the APCS, pseudocode in CS Pricniples, using this array. Bam! They just all created a Linear Search.

So, why eggs?

I used to do this writing numbers on the board. They watched and I did. It is always better when THEY do. They are going to remember the Linear Search much better if it was their idea in the first place.

Also, when you do numbers the amazing processor that is the human brain can just scan the list and pick the biggest. No problem.

But a computer cannot do that - it cannot just look at a data set in aggregate and pick one. It must "touch" every piece of data in the set and make a comparison. Which is exactly what the kids do with the eggs. Point that out, they should know that.

This is also a good time to go over swapping. They get so confused on this.

How many times have you had them try to swap two numbers and they do:

a = b;
b = a;

Here is the fix: Hand each group some cups - make it look like you are giving them an arbitrary number, but make sure they all get at least 3.

Rule - you can only have an egg in a cup. NEVER can you have two eggs in a  cup. Now swap two eggs.

Again, once they get the point of using a third cup, you have them write out the algorithm in the language of your choice.

What You Need To Know About Cloud Hosting Chicago

By Helene Norris

Cloud hosting Chicago is now a fully established sector with many firms of all sizes and structures adapting to this new technology. Experts project that this trend will continue to develop and grow in the near future. While this service is beneficial for various firms, it is not without its drawbacks. This is especially true for smaller entities. If used properly, working with the data can vastly benefit all types of firms.

One particular advantage is enhanced efficiency when it comes to upgrades, usage and maintenance. Many small businesses find conventional software to be expensive. This is especially so for proprietary programs which need several licenses for multiple users. On the other hand, hosted systems can be sourced at much lower prices and can dramatically reduce IT expenditure in an entity. There are also many options which one can choose from. These range from pay as you go, one time and scalable.

This system also offers almost unlimited storage capacity. One doesnt have to worry about lack of space or increasing their current capacity. It also offers peace of mind when it comes to risks such as fire which could damage conventional computers.

Since all the data is stored in remote servers, it makes it easy to restore and backup when compared to physical devices. Most providers also possess the expertise to handle data recovery. This hence makes the entire procedure of recovery and backup simpler when compared with traditional information storage systems.

Integration of software is also done automatically. This means that you wont need to initiate any additional measures to integrate and customize your applications to suit your preferences. You can also customize your options with greater ease. A firm can thus choose the services and applications which complement their operations.

It is also easy to access the stored information. All that is required is a secure internet connection. This lets you move beyond geographical location issues and time zones. This can be very helpful for companies whose staff tends to travel a lot while on the job.

The system also offers the advantage of quick deployment. Once one opts for this method, the entire system can be fully activated in a matter of minutes. However, the amount of time needed to set up depends on the kind of technology that you use in your firm.

This technology also has its drawbacks which one must be aware of before they can opt to use it. One particularly significant risk is outages and technical problems. Practically all providers have to deal with such issues despite maintaining stellar operational standards. Connectivity and network problems could also pose issues when you want to access your data.

Remote storage of data could also make your company vulnerable to external attacks and threats. As it is well recognized, nothing on the internet is safe from these. Theres always a chance of sensitive data leaking to third parties.

Before adopting this technology, its important to know that your firms sensitive information will be surrendered to a third party. This could put your business at a higher risk. You must therefore choose the most reliable provider who will keep your data secured properly. Like anything else, cloud hosting Chicago has its advantages and drawbacks. While this technology could prove to be of great benefit to your business, it could also cause harm if misused.

Top Reasons Why You Must Know More About Game Console Repair

By Georgia Diaz

Consoles for games are devices which allow the conversion of various data into signals that can be understood or made sense by a gamer. These devices are most commonly used to provide users the ability to manipulate game-related programs. However, such machines may also be used for other purposes like communication, internet surfing, purchases, programming, music player, video display and many more functions. These machines are subjected to nearly abusive use by people, inducing the wear and tear of a product. Because of the high probability of damage being dealt to this equipment, it is very convenient to know a little bit more about game console repair.

The vision of the modern home gaming machines was first attributed to Ralph Baer, who envisioned a future where such equipment will be present in every home. The first ever home gaming machine that was available for public consumption was the Magnavox Odyssey, and was truly a revolutionary piece of equipment during that time. The equipment allowed for the connection to a television.

People became instantly entertained by playing with each other through the technology. Early gamers were able to play games like tennis, basketball, table tennis, shooting, hockey, roulette, volleyball and many others. Almost overnight, a positive and drastic change gripped the families of the world.

Quite a few more innovations happened in the entertainment sector during that time. ROM and microprocessors further advanced gaming technologies during the 1970s. After some time, consoles from the third generation were capable of extending game time, like is RPGs, improving graphics quality, much better audio and saving game progress, among others.

The games were installed into the machines using various means, which was dependent on what generation the device was considered to be in. The loading manner, or media, was either via internet streaming, optical technologies, magnetic media, gaming cards and the cartridge. Nowadays, popular media include the optical and the internet streaming technologies.

Major changes are featured by devices belonging to the newer generation of personal gaming machines, which is far different from the traditional technologies. Such devices are becoming more similar to personal computers in terms of performance. In a very short amount of time, such machines may now process huge amounts of data. Memory availability has also been constantly expanded with newer gaming devices.

A lot of people still opt to own gaming consoles for purposes of playing games, as compared to owning a personal computer instead. Several reasons have been identified to explain this tendency. First is that such a machine does not have issues about compatibility. Cost also is a determining factor, since they are relatively cheaper. No technical skill is also required to set-up such a system due to its straight-forward, plug-and-play characteristic. Another reason is that since the machine is designed mostly for the purpose of gaming, loading time of programs are much quicker than in computers.

One cannot deny the popularity of such machines nowadays. Experts believe that the use of this technology will only increase. Damages to the gaming devices will definitely rise, as the number of people using them increases. Game console repair then becomes a critical knowledge for gamers, so that gameplay is never unintentionally interrupted.
