Internet Safety 2 days left! Alice programming introduction

There are 2 days left to work on (in class) your Internet Safety project.  Tomorrow is the last day you will be allowed to work on it and it should be done by the end of the hour.

If you are done you are going to begin working on Alice - an Educational software program that teaches you computer programming in a 3D environment.  To use Alice, go to Finder on your computer.  Next, double click on the Alice folder.  Then, double click on the icon labeled Alice - you will need to agree to any user agreements.

Once you have opened Alice come back here and go to the following video and watch an introduction on how you will interact with the Alice interface.

Alice introductory video

Once you have watched that video you will begin working in Alice with Oracle Academy.  You will work through a series of Lessons that will help you to better understand how Alice works and how to manipulate the Alice programming environment.  Here is where you need to go:

Oracle Academy

Once at that website, click on "Get Started with Alice 3" under the red rectangle on the left side of the page (the red rectangle says "Self Study: Getting started with Java using Alice").  Work through each of the sections of that lesson - if you complete all of the sections move to the next lesson ("Add and Position Objects"); if you complete the different sections of that lesson move on the next lesson, and so on.

We will be using Alice often in the last quarter - you will be getting a head start on learning the software.

Vocabulary introduction beginning week 2

This week:

Vocabulary
Create Wikispace accounts
Create a Classmarker account
Review of all keys learned
Learn N, G, Left Shift key, period (.)
Technique grade

TODAY:
We are going to begin by talking about the vocab words and vocab lists for the class.  If you go to the vocabulary page on the blog youll see a variety of information - well be covering this today.  Additionally, youll need to have access to the wikispaces page so that you can submit vocabulary definitions (thats already been done by me - you will need to verify by checking your gmail, and well do that in a little bit).

The vocabulary for this class is really split into 2 parts - on one hand you will be responsible for knowing all of the
vocabulary words for any given week, and you will demonstrate your knowledge by completing a vocab quiz.  On the other hand you will be required to find definitions for the vocab words and post them to the wiki for everyone to study off of.  This "research process" will be graded, just as the vocab quizzes will be graded (our first vocabulary quiz will be this Friday, and it will be taken online on a website called Classmarker).

When you post a definition to the Wiki, your definition should be easy to understand.  Sometimes, after finding a definition, you will see that the definition that you have found doesnt help you to understand what that vocab word means (or is).  Therefore, find definitions that are easy to understand, and if you cant find one that makes sense please see me so I can help you write an easy-to-understand definition.

Additionally, if you have a vocab word that is an acronym (GPS, WWW, or FAQ) then please include what the letters stand for (for example, WWW stands for World Wide Web, and when you enter your vocab definition on the wiki make sure to include that).
This will seem a little foreign to begin with, but we will be talking about this every day between now and the end of next week, which is when your first quiz will be.
You could set up a calendar reminder in Google so that you receive an email - this way you will be reminded several days in advance of when you need to have a definition posted on the wiki.  And, since you already know the words that you will be asked to define, you could find a definition for each of your words and save those definitions in a Google Doc - then when it is your week all you have to do is copy from your Google Doc to the Wiki.

Vocab Quiz 2 Hardware 2 Formatting Activity 1

Youll be given a few minutes at the beginning of class to review for the quiz - youll want to go to your Wikispaces page to do that.  Do NOT go to Classmarker until asked to do so.  As a reminder, make sure to submit your quiz answers - failure to do so will mean that you will have to come back and retake the quiz.

When you are done you will need to complete Formatting Activity 1, which is embedded below.  The instructions are given here - follow the instructions in order.  However, instead of completing steps 7 and 8 what you need to do is save your file to a flash drive. We will cover how to complete step 8 on Monday.  IF YOU DO NOT SAVE YOUR DOCUMENT TO YOUR FLASH DRIVE IT WILL BE ERASED AND YOU WILL HAVE TO START OVER NEXT WEEK!!!

If you get done you are welcome to go to the website resources page on the blog, go to the practice websites and play typing games.

openSUSE 12 2 on a Samsung R510 almost perfect out of the box!

Had the brightness function buttons worked...but the solution is very simple.

Just  add acpi_backlight=vendor to the boot loader and the brightness buttons will now work as intended, controlling the backlight.

This will also apply to other Samsung Netbooks/Laptops.

On the subject of openSUSE 12.2, I have to say it is a very nice release.

Everything seems to be working, it is fast and nippy!

The two months of extra stabilisation have really paid off, I find it annoying when a distribution that has an emphasis on stability such as openSUSE or Ubuntu is released in a too much of a buggy state.

But we must meet the release schedule....

In the case of a community project, is meeting the release schedule more important than providing users with a better experience?

I think we can safely say no, and if the release schedule has to be delayed in order to provide users with a better experience it should be done without question.

Putting the users first is what makes a true community project, so well done openSUSE.

You fulfilled one of your guiding principles, to make users happy.

One comparison I always make when using a Linux distribution is how speedy / responsive it feels when compared to Windows 7, with concern to openSUSE 12.2 I am having a hard time deciding.

Thats a good thing if you ask me.

I dont expect the battery time to be better as some Windows drivers have better power management features, such as the Intel display driver which allows you to adjust the power setting (High performance / lower power consumption) and create a profile when using the battery / mains power.

I have yet to poke around in the Intel Linux driver / kernel module, maybe an equivalent setting is there.

I noticed KDE no longer provides a battery time estimate, a decision made by the KDE team. See here for further information - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=304510

Essentially it was too inaccurate, which I would have to agree with. Even Windows is inaccurate for that matter.

There must be something to complain about?

Works well, looks really good, the artwork in 12.2 really goes that extra mile but there is no point making things look good if the end result is not going to be practical.

Try editing your kernel boot entry at start up, that really nice light green background does not go well with the light grey text. It is a struggle to read certain parts.

I was feeling too lazy to set up a VirtualBox but this photo of my laptop screen gives a good idea.

Overall, my first impressions of openSUSE 12.2 are positive and it is a distribution worth trying at the very least. And if it remains on my R510 till the end of the year, I would award openSUSE 12.2 best distribution of 2012.

You did a good job on this one openSUSE Project!

HOWTO SmoothSec 3 2 beta as Intrusion Detection System IDS

I am going to tell you how to build an affortable Intrusion Detection System (IDS) at home or SOHO or small business. For building an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), I will write another article about it later.

Hardware

Motherboard - Intel Desktop Board D510MO

RAM - 4GB DDR2 (2 x 2GB)

Hard Drive - 320GB

Network Card 0 - Onboard Gigabit

Network Card 1 - TP-Link TG-3269 Gigabit PCI Network Adapter (with low profile)

Network Card 2 - D-Link DUB-E100 USB 2.0 Fast Ethernet Adapter (up to 200MB)

Software

Operating System - SmoothSec 3.2 beta (64-bit). The beta version is no longer exist. Please go to official site for the Version 3.2. The beta and official version are same. The official site is at here.

Setup

Internet -- Router -- SmoothSec -- Switch -- Personal Computers

Network Card 0 and 1 will be bridged up while Network Card 2 will be a management interface.

Step 1 :

First of all, SmoothSec (Network Card 2) is connected to the Switch while Network Card 0 and 1 do not connect to the router. It is because you need to connect to the internet for the installation.

Step 2 :

Install SmoothSec as usual. When you prompt for install non-free network interface firmware, just ignore it. After installed, the box will be reboot.

Login as "root" with password "toor".

Step 3 (Bug Fix):

Suricata

nano /etc/suricata/suricata.yaml

Locate "- fast:" and change "enabled: no" to "enabled: yes".

Locate "- drop:" and change "enabled: no" to "enabled: yes".

Locate "HOME_NET: [192.168.1.0/24]" and change to "HOME_NET: [192.168.0.0/24]".

*or your network subnet.

Time Zone for Snorby

If your time zone is not UTC, you should run the following command :

dpkg-reconfigure tzdata

Set the time zone for "UTC" at "None of the above"; otherwise, the Snorby will reported wrong timestamp.

nano /var/www/snorby/config/snorby_config.yml

Make sure "production:" and "timezone_search: false".

Make sure "time_zone: UTC" is commented.

Set your time zone at the Snorby web interface when it is available after Step 5.

Email feature of Snorby

apt-get install postfix libxrender-dev libfontconfig1

Configure the Postfix properly according to your network at "/etc/postfix/main.cf".

nano /var/www/snorby/config/initializers/mail_config.rb

Uncomment the lines just below "# Sendmail Example:".

Step 4 :

Connect Network Card 0 to router and Network Card 1 to Switch.

Normally, Network Card 0 will be eth0, Network Card 1 will be eth1 and Network Card 2 will be eth2.

nano /etc/network/interfaces

Comment all about eth2 entries.

Append the following :

auto eth2

iface eth2 inet static

   address 192.168.0.120

   netmask 255.255.255.0

   gateway 192.168.0.1

* where the "address" is your SmoothSec IP address and "gateway" is the IP address of your router.

nano /etc/init.d/bridge

Change "net1=eth1" to "net1=eth0"

Change "net2=eth2" to "net2=eth1"

Change "brctl addif $br eth1" to "brctl addif $br eth0"

Change "brctl addif $br eth2" to "brctl addif $br eth1"

update-rc.d bridge defaults

Step 5:

Run the script "smoothsec.first.setup" in the terminal.

Type "br0" when asking for monitor network interface.

Select "Snort" or "Suricata" as IDS Engine. I choose "Suricata".

Then reboot.

Once boot up, go to one of the Personal Computers and browse "https://192.168.0.120". Then set the time zone and your report email address accordingly.

Step 6:

To update SmoothSec, you need to do the following commands (you can make a script to do so). The rules will be updated automatically in the early morning every day.

apt-get update

apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get --purge autoclean

apt-get --purge autoremove

# update SmoothSec

cd /root/updates/

git pull origin master

# update Snorby

cd /var/www/snorby

git pull origin master

rake snorby:update

cd ~

# update pigsty

npm update -g pigsty

npm update -g pigsty-mysql

# update Suricata rules

smoothsec.suricata.rules.update

Known Issue

Nil.

You should remember that your box is in UTC time zone.

Debug the mailing feature

Do not run the following commands unless you really need to.

cd /var/www/snorby

bundle exec rails c production

Snorby::Jobs::SensorCacheJob.new(true).perform

Snorby::Jobs::DailyCacheJob.new(true).perform
(This command is invalid for Snorby version 2.6.2)

Reference

Snorby GitHub

Suricata

SmoothSec

Pigsty

SmoothSec WiKi - for installation

Thats all! See you.
